HFW retains every major system from HZD and then builds on it. Looking back, it almost makes HZD look RPG- lite by comparison. What I truly didn’t expect was for HFW to dwarf its predecessor in every way – not just because of how it looks, but due to the size, scope, customization, accessibility, and depth of its RPG mechanics too. And while of course from a performance and graphical perspective, HFW has set an amazing new benchmark for games on the system, it’s so much more than just a visual step forward.
Honestly, going into the release of HFW, I expected it to surpass HZD in most ways – that’s what you hope for in a sequel like this, especially on a new generation of consoles. Simply put, the lessons Guerrilla learned from HZD and the amount of creativity they put into HFW makes this a singularly stellar sophomore title for the franchise.
It elevates almost every aspect of the original game: there are more machines, more weapons, more crafting, more characters, more ways to customize your playstyle and appearance, more strategic approaches to combat, more vertical environments, more epic Tallneck moments, more diverse biomes, more side activities, more insane plot twists and just more MORE.

In this case, I’m talking about Horizon Forbidden West from Guerrilla Games for PS4 and PS5.
The kind that, when it finally comes out, consumes your attention it grabs hold of you and you don’t want it to let go. The kind that you’ve watched every step of the development for. A game comes out that I’m really excited for – you know the type. The components for Forbidden Jungle include a collection of alien eggs, hatchlings and fully grown extraterrestrial, who are presumably the creatures out for the player characters’ blood.Once every couple of years, I get to do something truly special. On top of that, the group in Forbidden Jungle will also have to watch out for the gradually collapsing buildings they’ll be navigating through to discover the portal’s location.īesides finding the portal, the players will be tasked with moving the tiles making up the abandoned outpost in order to power the portal up enough to take them home. However, the players will need to avoid an amassing horde of venomous creatures native to the planet, all of whom are circling around the escapees in the hopes of a meal. In the game, players will be searching the ruins of an abandoned outpost on the planet in order to find the whereabouts of a portal that will hopefully send them home. Wheels highlights some of the most exciting games coming this year. In the case of the newest co-op board game in the franchise, players will be looking to work together to find a way out of the intergalactic jungle and off the planet. Though each of the entries in the ‘Forbidden series’ stand on their own, they all share similar gameplay mechanics – such as tile manipulation and searching for certain items - and the theme of needing to escape a dangerous location.
